Almost 70% of Moroccans Are Against Gender Equality in Inheritance

Rabat – A new survey reveals that 69% of Moroccans oppose gender equality in inheritance, believing that men and women should not receive equal shares of inheritance.

Men on average seem to oppose gender equality in inheritance at a higher rate than women, says the survey conducted by Sunergia, a Moroccan market research firm.

More than two-thirds – 74% – of respondents who said they are against gender equality in inheritance are men, while only 23% of the opposing votes were from women, Sunergia found.

In addition to gender, age is also a determining factor on the question of inheritance. The survey results indicate that the older the population, the more likely they are to vote against the measure.

Out of the over 1000 surveyed individuals, 31% of young people aged 18 to 24 said they are for inheritance equality. But the ratio drops lower with the 25-34 and 35-44 age groups: it averages 20% for the first age group and then 18% for the second, Sunergia said in its report.

Of all age groups, individuals belonging to the 45-54 group seem to be the most vehement opponents of gender equality in inheritance: only 14% of them said they are in favor of equal distribution of inheritance irrelevant of gender.

According to the Moroccan research firm, geographical distribution is not statistically significant in predicting opinion, as 70% and 69% of urban and rural areas respectively opposed inheritance equality for men and women.

Surprisingly, Sunergia’s report reveals that the age group with the highest rate of support for gender equality in inheritance is actually not the youngest.

Instead, it is senior citizens — aged between 55 and 64 — who were more in favor of inheritance equality, with  36% of surveyed individuals from that age group saying they support gender equality in inheritance.
