Rabat – Moroccan athletes have secured 37 medals at the 5th Islamic Solidarity Games, making Morocco the best performing African nation at the tournament.
The Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation, the event’s organizer, reported earlier today on Instagram that Morocco ranks 7th in the tournament with nine golds, eight silvers, and 20 bronzes.
On Monday, Moroccan judokas Abderrahmane Boushita in the under 66 kilograms (kg) weight category and Soumiya Iraoui in the under 52 kg category won two silver medals after losing in their respective final games.
Boushita secured her medal after losing to Uzbekistan’s Sardor Nurillaev while another Uzbek Diyora Keldiyorova defeated Iraoui in the final.
Prior to that, the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation had lauded Moroccan athletes’ performance in the tournament, stating that “Morocco is the leading African nation on the medals table at the 5th Islamic Solidarity Games with 35 colored medals so far.”

The federation added that “9 golds have been won by Athletics, Taekwondo and Bocce players, 6 silver medals came in the same sports and 20 bronze medals including two came in shooting.”
Morocco notably ranked behind the host country Turkey, which topped the games with 234 medals; followed by Uzbekistan with 112 medals, Iran with 110 medals, and Azerbaijan with 67 medals. Kazakhstan and Indonesia occupied the fifth and sixth positions with 68 and 39 medals respectively.
Morocco collected more medals than Algeria and Bahrain which secured 22 medals each, as well as Qatar and Kuwait which won 10 and 9 medals in respective order.
Morocco’s global ranking in the Islamic Solidarity Games can improve in the following days as the games will be concluded on August 18th in Konya.
