World Bank Applauds Climate Resiliency Program in Morocco

Rabat – The World Bank has lauded the results of its Morocco Integrated Disaster Risk Management and Resilience Program, explaining that it insures close to 9 million people against bodily injury as a result of climate change.

According to a report by the World Bank, the program was able to redesign Morocco’s Fund for the Fight against Natural catastrophes, supporting 180 disaster risk reduction projects and completing several structural projects.

The program also helped in the preparation of the country’s first national strategy for managing natural disaster risks, with the strategy covering 18 programs and 57 projects from 2021 to 2026.

Finally, the World Bank said its program helped the Moroccan government adopt a disaster risk insurance program, insuring close to 9 million people in Morocco against the risks of bodily harm as a result of climate change.

The World Bank group said it provided $300 million ($3.1 billion) for the program, with technical assistance programs also being funded by Switzerland and the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery.

While the program is set to close on December 31 next year, the World Bank says the established projects and authorities can help continue the progress, arguing that similar progress had been seen in other countries like Mozambique and Tunisia.

While Morocco does not contribute as much to climate change as more industrialized nations, the country has still experienced the effects of the global climate crisis.

In response to the global climate emergency, the country has been strengthening its renewable energy resources, committing to a goal of sourcing 80% of its energy through renewables by 2050.

This year, Morocco experienced severe droughts and high temperatures, affecting agricultural output. Experts have attributed this to climate change and greenhouse gasses.
