Rabat – Pep Guardiola’s extraordinary dedication to Manchester City came under the spotlight after a new Amazon Prime documentary revealed previously unseen moments from behind the scenes at the English club.
The Spanish coach, who left Manchester City at the end of last season after a remarkable decade at the Etihad Stadium, is shown struggling to cope with a dramatic downturn in results and growing frustration with his players.
Guardiola won 20 trophies during his time at Manchester City, establishing one of the most successful eras in the club’s history. However, the documentary, titled A Beautiful Obsession, also highlights the personal and professional toll that period took on him.
One of the most difficult stretches came in the autumn of 2024, when City endured a remarkable run of nine defeats and just one victory across 13 matches.
The team’s struggles also became increasingly visible in public. Guardiola appeared visibly tense during press conferences, particularly after City surrendered a three-goal lead against Feyenoord to draw 3-3 in the Champions League.
But behind closed doors, the manager’s frustration was even more intense.
Guardiola and Walker clash in heated dressing-room exchange
One of the documentary’s most revealing scenes shows Guardiola involved in a heated confrontation with then-captain Kyle Walker.
Walker reportedly felt that Guardiola was repeatedly singling him out during team meetings, despite being chosen as captain by his teammates.
Following the defeat to Liverpool, Walker confronted Guardiola over what he considered unfair treatment.
“You keep mentioning my name in every meeting,” Walker told his manager, according to the documentary. “Every meeting, my name comes up.”
Walker also suggested that Guardiola had not wanted him to become captain of the team.
Guardiola responded by accusing Walker of taking the criticism too personally, but the manager himself appeared deeply affected by the situation.
As questions grew over his future, Guardiola explained why he had decided to extend his contract despite City’s poor run of results.
“If I am the problem, you have to tell me,” Guardiola said emotionally. “I will not stay here for the money or just to continue.”
He added that his decision to renew was motivated by his desire to remain with the players and fight through the difficult period.
“I extended my contract because I want to be with you. I want to fight. I don’t want you to feel that I am leaving or running away.”
“I sacrifice my life for You”
Another emotional scene reportedly took place in November 2025 following Manchester City’s disappointing 2-0 Champions League defeat to Bayer Leverkusen.
Guardiola had made 10 changes to his starting lineup for the match, but the decision backfired as City produced a performance that left their manager furious.
In the dressing room, Guardiola reportedly questioned his players’ courage, passion and desire to win.
“This is unacceptable,” he told them. “This lack of courage, passion, love, desire to win and desire to perform better.”
The manager then spoke openly about the sacrifices he had made during his career and the personal cost of remaining committed to Manchester City.
“I work for you. I sacrifice my life,” Guardiola said. “I went through a divorce, my family is away from me, everything for all of you. And what do you give me in return?”
He then expressed his exhaustion and even suggested that he was ready to leave the club.
“It is shameful, guys. I am so tired,” Guardiola said. “When I see that, I feel exhausted. I am drained. I want to resign.”
The remarks provide a rare glimpse into the emotional pressure experienced by one of football’s most successful managers.
A decade of success and pressure
Guardiola’s tenure at Manchester City ultimately produced an extraordinary list of achievements.
Under his leadership, City developed into one of the dominant forces in English and European football, winning numerous Premier League titles as well as the Champions League and other major trophies.
Yet the documentary shows that success came with considerable pressure. Even during his most successful years, Guardiola demanded an extremely high level of commitment from his players.
The behind-the-scenes footage also reveals disagreements within the club’s hierarchy over transfer policy, offering viewers a closer look at the decisions that shaped the squad.
De Bruyne’s disappointment
The documentary also reportedly features the disappointment of Kevin De Bruyne, one of the most influential players of Guardiola’s Manchester City era.
After years of service to the club, the Belgian midfielder was informed that his contract would not be renewed.
De Bruyne’s reaction adds another emotional dimension to the documentary, which explores not only Guardiola’s relationship with his players but also the difficult decisions involved in rebuilding a squad after years of success.
The four-part series covers Manchester City’s last two seasons and provides an unusually candid look at the club, from dressing-room arguments and managerial pressure to boardroom discussions about recruitment and the futures of key players.
For Guardiola, the footage offers a different perspective on his Manchester City legacy: behind the trophies and tactical brilliance was a manager who invested enormous emotional energy in his players and, at his lowest moments, questioned whether the sacrifice was worth it.
