Laayoune – Trains in Morocco have transported over 4.5 million travelers in July 2022, according to the country’s National Office of Railways (ONCF) on Thursday.

According to the press release, the number of train users have increased by 30% from last year’s July. This number is also 20% higher by 20% compared to July 2019, which confirms that transportation in Morocco have recovered significantly from the peaks of the COVID-19 crisis.

The ONCF also declared a 193% debt ratio with its total debt reaching MAD 43 billion ($4.63 billion) in the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, due to a reduction in the number of passengers.

The press release noted that every day more than 182,000 people travel by train in Morocco, including more than 20,000 people who travel on the high-speed Al Boraq trains alone.

The new resurgence of railway traffic in Morocco is a result of several campaigns by ONCF, as well as the reduction of COVID-19 restrictions on transportation.

An exclusive Summer 2022 plan by the ONCF has been implemented, based on the scheduling of over 232 trains per day, including 30 Al Boraq trains.

ONCF deployed all its human and material resources as part of its summer 2022 plan, to better support and assist passengers during their journey in the station and on board of trains, while ensuring that they are in the best conditions for comfort and safety.
