Casablanca – According to a recent study by the Council of the Moroccan Community Abroad (CCME), 95% of young Moroccans residing in Europe visit Morocco, with 61% doing so yearly.
Titled “The situation of young Moroccans living in Europe,” the study confirms the attachment the Moroccan diaspora has to their homeland. It also reflects the role that family and friends play in returning to the motherland, strengthening the sense of belonging and religious practice.
Local attachment
The results also revealed that Moroccans living abroad have a strong desire to integrate into their host countries, as evidenced by the indicators of participation in civil life, with 66% holding the nationality of their host country.
According to the survey, around 85% of these young people acquire the language of their host country, despite a feeling, in some cases, of being victims of racism.
However, the study found that indices linked to future and professional confidence remain relatively strong, with 80% of interviewees declaring themselves confident about their professional future.
According to the study, 64% of the interviewees believe that education, alongside service sectors, industry, and tourism, should be Morocco’s top investment priority.
In this regard, two-thirds of participants expressed their willingness to return to invest in their country of origin, with Moroccans from Germany and Italy being the most hesitant to do so, the study found.
Critical of Morocco’s government
Meanwhile, the study underlined the Moroccan community’s divergent views on reforms in the country, with the majority of participants expressing dissatisfaction with Moroccan institutions’ services.
According to the findings, 41% were unsatisfied with international transportation, 48% with consular services, and 52% with justice in Morocco.
The study also focused on developing a better understanding of the reality, opinions, and challenges of young Moroccans residing in Europe and enriching discussions around public policies targeting this community.
In this study, the CCME based itself on a survey conducted in collaboration with Ipsos Maroc.
It also relied on face-to-face interviews with young Moroccans living in Europe, in accordance with scientific sampling and statistics-gathering.
