Rabat -Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses will play a warm-up game against Canada in October in preparation for the upcoming 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
According to Canada Soccer, the Moroccan national football team is set to face its Canadian counterpart on October 10 in Spain, as part of the 2022 FIFA international window.
The match is scheduled to take place at Estadio Municipal de Chapin in Jerez, Spain.
Speaking about upcoming friendly matches against Morocco and Argentina, the head coach of Canada’s national women’s football team said that the warm-up games provide her squad with “the opportunity to experience different styles of opposition that will come with the expanded 32-nation FIFA Women’s World Cup.”
She went on to add that “this is the last window before the FIFA Women’s World Cup draw and so from this window we are excited to learn our path and finalize 2022-2023 planning.”
As of the time of writing, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has not commented on the upcoming friendly match.
Given the huge gap in FIFA ranking between Canada (6th globally) and Morocco (77th), the Atlas Lionesses are expected to have a tough time. Still, the warm-up game will be a good opportunity for the Moroccan squad to re-evaluate its progress and increase team synergy.
Morocco qualified for the 2023 World Cup for the first time ever in July after defeating Nigeria in a spectacular game at the Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat during the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon).
Morocco’s impressive performance in the African championship made headlines worldwide in a celebration of a historic moment in the country’s football. Today, Morocco’s women’s football is increasingly asserting dominance over the African scene but it has a long way ahead to reach the world’s top 10 or 20 teams.
