Rabat – Sexual misconduct allegations surrounding Israel’s recalled envoy to Morocco, David Govrin, have made headlines worldwide. In response, the Israeli ministry of foreign affairs has decided to replace the former envoy with Alona Fisher-Kamm.
A source told Morocco World News that Fisher-Kamm will temporarily head the Israeli Liaison Office in Rabat.
Govrin was recalled earlier this month to Israel. The decision came after the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation (KAN) broke the news on September 6 that the Israeli diplomat was facing allegations of workplace “irregularities” and sexual misconduct.
Govrin addressed the allegations earlier this week on Twitter, describing them as “false.”
“These baseless and misleading rumors, which are being promoted by stakeholders regarding sexual harassment, are merely complete fabrications,” the Israeli diplomat tweeted.
Govrin’s lawyer also denied the sexual misconduct allegations in a letter to Israel’s Foreign Ministry Director General Alon Ushpiz, claiming that the chief security officer of the Israeli Liaison in Rabat, Ran Metzuyanim, made up the allegations for personal revenge.
Officials from Israel’s ministry of foreign affairs have been reported in the Israeli media as maintaining that Govrin will most likely not return to Rabat.
Fisher-Kamm, who will now be heading the Israeli Liaison Office in Rabat, is the former Israeli ambassador to Serbia and the non-resident ambassador to Montenegro.
Who is Alona Fisher-Kamm?
Alona Fisher-Kamm launched her career as a diplomat over 25 years ago when she joined Israel’s ministry of foreign affairs in Jerusalem. Her first mission was to Buenos Aires in the Culture, Media, and Public Diplomacy Department. She stayed there from 1992 to 1995 before being promoted to the first secretary in the Latin American Department from 1995 to 1998. She later served as the media adviser and spokesperson in Israel’s Embassy to Paris from 1998 to 2002.
In 2002, she left Paris to settle in Madrid where she served as a deputy director in the Multilateral Peace Talks Department for two years and as deputy chief of mission from 2004 to 2008.
In 2009, Fisher-Kamm returned to Jerusalem to train young Israeli diplomats for their future missions abroad. She was in charge of the Training Bureau at the Ministry in Jerusalem from 2009 to 2016.
The seasoned Israeli diplomat holds a PhD in political science from Tel Aviv University and a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree with honors from the same university. She speaks Hebrew, French, Spanish, and English.
Her over two-decade-long professional experience and language proficiency best prepare her for the increasingly critical Rabat position as Israel seeks to deepen its diplomatic and strategic relations with Morocco.
