Rabat – Speaking at the 158th Ministerial Meeting of the League of Arab States in Cairo on Tuesday, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita said the upcoming Arab Summit has to be held “on a foundation of responsibility, and away from any narrow calculations or outdated logic.”
The minister added that the summit should work on building trust and improving solidarity between member states, with an eye on the respect of each country’s regional role and territorial integrity.
Bourita drew attention to Morocco’s engagement at the heart of cooperative Arab action, saying that the country’s commitment to the Arab League’s main mechanisms and sub-organizations reflect its belief in the urgent need to bolster inter-Arab cooperation and solidarity.
He called for an “objective reading of the Arab World’s reality,” adding that it is charged with internal disagreements and conflicts, as well as plans that aim to divide and stoke the fires of conflict in the region.
One of the Arab world’s main issues, Bourita said, is the absence of a shared and clear vision among Arab states to face those challenges in a way that preserves peace, stability, and the countries’ territorial and national integrity.
He added that the Arab World finds itself in a “difficult crossroads” that necessitates increased solidarity between Arab nations, as well as a focus on the biggest political and economic challenges.
“It is time to put in place strong foundations for an integrated Arab partnership aiming to improve the tools of common Arab action,” Bourita continued.
Highlighting the Palestinian issue, the minister said the recent developments in the country necessitate “realistic and pragmatic” approaches to deal with the conflict.
Morocco will continue to advocate for the Palestinian people and defend their right to establish a state and peacefully co-exist with Israel, he vowed.
The Moroccan FM notably called the Palestinian cause one of the “constants” of Morocco’s foreign policy, noting King Mohammed VI’s presidence over the Al-Quds Committee.
Bourita also highlighted Morocco’s approach to the COVID-19 pandemic, saying that the kingdom will offer support to Arab and African countries to help them navigate the crisis.
The Moroccan FM concluded by drawing attention to the climate crisis, expressing hopes the upcoming COP 27 conference in Egypt will yield positive steps on the global, deepening climate challenges.
