Rabat- Morocco’s General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) conducted security operations in Rabat on Friday to safeguard the football match between Wydad of Casablanca (WAC) and Fath Union Sport (FUS) football teams.
According to reports by local media, the DGSN arrested around 81 people, including 46 minors for their involvement in criminal acts of violence in the stadium.
The suspects were detained during the preventive systematic operations the DGSN carried out in the sporting event, leading to the confiscation of 35 cold weapons, 13 units of explosives and metallic sticks, as well as the seizure and 50 units of narcotic medical pills.
Many Moroccan news outlets reported that, at the request of the Public Prosecutor Office, 27 of the arrested suspects have been placed in police custody and 16 minors are under police surveillance to ascertain their involvement in the crimes committed during the riots.
The incident is not the first of its kind in Morocco. In March this year, a similar sports riot occurred in a football match between FAR Rabat and MAS from Fez where 160 people, including 90 minors and public officials were injured.
