Rabat – A score of defense companies are racing to secure a military deal with Morocco to equip the country’s military with transport, reconnaissance, and multi-function light helicopters.
Tactical Report said on October 4 that the companies competing for the bid include US aerospace manufacturer Bell Textron and the Italian defense company Leonardo.
The news of the bid comes at a time when Morocco is being proactive in upgrading its military equipment.
Spanish news outlet OkDiario reported recently that Morocco purchased sophisticated military drones from China.
The purchase includes Wing Long II, a medium altitude long endurance unmanned aerial vehicle.
Morocco’s largest arms supplier is the US, supplying the kingdom with 91% of its arms. The remainder comes from France (9%) and the UK (0.3%).
In 2019, the North African country purchased 15 F-16 aircraft and associated equipment from the US.
In the 2022 “Global Firepower” index, Morocco was ranked 55th out of 140 countries in terms of military power.
With 325,000 soldiers, 200,000 of whom are in active military service, 100,000 reserve soldiers, and 25,000 in the paramilitary forces, Morocco was also placed as the fourth strongest military force in Africa.
