Rabat – Amina Majlal, the head of international production at SNRT Radio, has served as a leading figure in Moroccan radio for years.
Born and raised in Rabat, Majlal received her higher education at the Higher Institute of Audiovisual and Digital Media (INAsup) in Bry-sur-Marne, France, before returning back home to start a professional career in the media industry.
She landed her first job as a radio journalist at the English desk of Moroccan Radio and Television (RTM), currently known as The National Company of Radio and Television (SNRT).
Despite being passionate about interior architecture and design, Majlal found herself pursuing her interest in communication and media throughout her studies and career.
“In reality, my real dream was to become a designer, a profession that I am still passionate about,” the Moroccan journalist said in an interview with La Marocaine.
Growing up surrounded by Arabic and foreign press, Majlal grew a passion for journalism.
“My father gave me a taste for reading the foreign press,” she told the Moroccan magazine. “I also read Mustapha Amine’s articles on the front page of the newspaper Acharq Alawsat and all international press available in kiosks.”
Early exposure to the international press opened her eyes to the world of journalism and motivated her to work in the department of international production at SNRT.
Majlal’s admiration of journalism is clearly reflected in her views on the profession.
“I am convinced that a journalist, far from being a politician or an activist, is first and foremost an intellectual, and a knowledgeable professional, an artist of the word and of objective analysis,” she explained.
More than a journalist
In addition to working in Moroccan radio for over two decades, Majlal has held numerous positions as a translator, lecturer, and communication director.
She has notably worked as an English-French translator since 2006 for a set of books, websites, and documentaries.
Majlal has also explored her passion for teaching through her work with Morocco’s Specialized Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual (ISCA) as a lecturer on radio journalism and professional communication.
The Moroccan journalist was appointed as the Director of Communication at the Filmonmobile festival in 2017 in Rabat. The short-film festival celebrates the work of young filmmakers who shoot and edit 2-10 minute-long films on their mobile phones.
As she continues to explore new career paths while sharing her expertise with rising professionals, Majlal seeks to ensure the continuous training of new human resources in the audiovisual industry.
In 2018, the radio journalist was selected for the “Visage du Maroc” list alongside the renowned activist Aicha Chenna.
Having “started from the desire to give visibility to Moroccan women entrepreneurs,” the list, according to its creator Hind Chaouat, commemorates the achievements of Moroccan women in numerous sectors.
Having grown from an admirer of journalism to a radio journalist and a lecturer, Majlal believes that all her personal and professional roles have helped her build up a life experience that she is proud of.
By sharing her story, Majlal confirms that “a woman can build a great career if she believes in her potential.”
