Rabat – Morocco’s Rhamna province is emerging as a national beacon of knowledge, social innovation, and sustainable development, Governor of Rhamna Province Aziz Bouigane said yesterday.

The official made the statement in an opening speech for Rhamna Investor Day, an event dedicated to promoting the province’s potential as an investment destination.

Rhamna province has seen an exponential rise in its development in recent years thanks largely to it hosting one of Morocco’s leading universities, the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), Bouigane explained.

“UM6P is doing excellent work contributing to the development of the province,” the governor said, adding that the university’s research center is putting water scarcity and energy transition at the heart of its strategy.

Attended by high-profile government officials and representatives from the private sector, the event aimed to showcase the province’s assets and the incentives it offers national and international investors.

Presenting the various milestones UM6P achieved, the university’s Director of Entrepreneurship Yassine Laghzioui said that the Science & Technology innovation center at UM6P has already launched over 240 research projects and filed dozens of patents.

The university also supports more than 300 startups through its various incubation programs. It especially attempts to help startups addressing some of the country’s and Africa’s most pressing needs, through agriculture and tech-oriented programs.

The province currently boasts world-class infrastructure and has all it takes to reach its ambitions of becoming an investment hub, Laghzioui highlighted.

Yassine Mseffer, General Director at the Marrakech Regional Investment Center, also spoke at the event to emphasize that the investment center will be active in Rhamna and aim to make it as appealing to investors as possible.

“We first started in Marrakech, the industrial center of the region, then we made our second stop Safi, its energy production hub,” Mseffer said during the event. “Today we are proud to make our third stop at Rhamna, which is … the land of innovation and durability.”

Acknowledging that the region still faces difficulties in attracting investors, Mseffer said that authorities will work on streamlining procedures in the region and digitizing records to make entry easier for investors.

“This [Rhamna] is Marrakech’s Silicon Valley,” Mseffer concluded.

During the event, speakers stressed the need for creating a cooperation framework between various stakeholders from the public and private sectors. The framework could stimulate investments in the region and support the province’s socio-economic development to gain more traction.
