Rabat – The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has selected five players from Morocco’s AS FAR for the Best XI list of the 2022 Women’s Champions League.

The announcement followed the end of the tournament’s group phase with AS FAR qualifying for the final after beating Nigeria’s Bayelsa Queen 1-0 in Rabat on November 8.

The list of the best 11 players in the group phase of the Women’s Champions League featured AS FAR’s “impressive” goalkeeper Khadija Er-Rmichi, “formidable” midfielder Siham Boukhami, forward Fatima Tagnaout, and wingback duo Ghizlane Chhiri and Nouhaila Benzina.

AS FAR’s impressive performance in the tournament was reflected in the team’s numerous nominations for the Best XI list with five entries, ahead of the title holders of the 2021 edition Mamelodi Sundowns who have three names: forward Lelona Daweti and defender duo Bambanani Mbane, and Zanele Nhlapho.

As for the three remaining players in the 4-3-3 formation, there is Green Buffaloes’ Ireen Lungu and Bayelsa Queens’ Maryann Ezenagu who is joining Boukhami in the midfield, as well as Simba Queens’ captain Opah Clement in the forward next to Tagnaout.

Members from CAF’s Technical Study Group (TSG) selected the lineup based on the players’ performance in the group phase of the champions league.

The TSG consisted of the Head Coach of Cote d’Ivoire Clementine Toure, former Moroccan Football player Lamia Boumehdi, Head of CAF Women’s Football Development Meskerem Tadesse Goshime, and Technical Director of Namibia Jacqui Shipanga.

On Sunday, the Moroccan team is set to face South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns in the final. The African title holders qualified for the final after securing a 1-0 victory against Tanzania’s Simba Queens.

This year AS FAR is eyeing the trophy after winning the bronze medal in 2021.
