Rabat – King Mohammed VI is set to receive Morocco’s World Cup national football team soon after their arrival at the Rabat-Sale international airport on Tuesday.
In a statement, the Ministry of the Royal Household, Protocol, and Chancellery announced that, under royal instructions, the national football team will receive a royal reception in Rabat in recognition of their achievement during the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
Upon their arrival in Morocco, the national team is expected to be met by a large crowd of fans welcoming their victorious return, the ministry said.
After the team’s 5:00 pm arrival, they will take a short tour through Hassan II Street, November 16 Square, Chellah Square, King Hussein Square, then Mohammed V Street, Barid Square, Mohammed V Square, January 11 Square, Moulay El Hassan Street, and Bab As Sufara before reaching the Royal Palace.
In the Royal Palace, the Atlas Lions will “receive a high royal reception in celebration and appreciation of this great historical achievement,” the statement adds.
This is not the first time King Mohammed VI has acknowledged the achievements of the team. Following their historic win against Spain, the Moroccan monarch joined in the street celebrations downtown in Rabat, wearing the national team’s jersey and waving his flag from his car.
Morocco’s national football team made history this year in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, finishing in fourth place. With this year’s triumph, the team became the first African and Arab country to ever reach the semi-finals of the tournament.
Their outstanding performance captured the attention of audiences in Morocco and all around the world. On their journey to the semi-finals, the team knocked out a number of heavy-weight teams, including Portugal and Spain.
The team especially proved that achieving a World Cup title in the future is within their reach, as the national team’s coach Walid Regragui pointed out after the match against France.
