Rabat – President of the Canary Islands Angel Victor Torres is planning on visiting Morocco between February 16-21, to boost relations between the two countries.
The visit aims to strengthen diplomatic ties as Torres recognizes the need for “better relations” with neighboring countries, wrote Spanish news outlet Canarias ahora.
Echoing Torres’ sentiment, Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez expressed that a good relationship between Spain and Morocco “is fundamental.”
Torres highlighted that boosting ties with Morocco is important for the Canary Islands for a variety of reasons, including “international relations, business, economic and migrant control.
In the same statement, Torres recalled the reestablished ties between Madrid-Rabat, noting they have returned to “normal.”
Torres noted he will be accompanied on the official visit by a business delegation, explaining that this is because there are many Canary-owned businesses in Morocco and the relationship between the two countries relies heavily on business. “As neighbors, we need to have the best relationship possible,” he stressed.
He concluded that the most important point to focus on is the result of the meeting.
As Spain and Morocco have recently been working on boosting ties, Sanchez stated that a strong relationship between Madrid and Rabat is not only beneficial for Spain “but for the whole EU.”
