Rabat – As little as 27% of Algerians believe that the current economic situation is “good or very good” in Algeria.

Arab Barometer issued a report, highlighting the challenges that Algerians face, particularly regarding the economic crisis, and corruption, among others.

In terms of the economy, a quarter of Algerians believe that the economy is an “important concern for Algerians.”

“Only 27% of Algerians report the current economic situation as good or very good,” the report said, stressing differences in assessment depending on age, class, and in urban and rural areas.

Around  93% of Algerians living in Algiers see the current economic situation “to be bad or very bad,” compared to  78 % in Northcentral Algeria, 71 % in the Northwest, 70 % in the South, and 66% percent in the Northeast of the country.

The report acknowledges that there is a slight change in how Algerians see their current economic situation compared to 2019.

“The percentage of Algerians reporting the economic situation as good or very good is 14 percentage points higher than in 2019,” the report said.

This is not the first time Algerians have been concerned about the economic crisis in the North African country.

A 2019 report by the Arab Barometer showed that the majority of Algerians see their country’s economy being the most pressing concern.

Based on the report, 40% of Algerians put national economic anxiety as their first concern.

Another report from the Economic Freedom Index in 2022 ranked Algeria among the 10 lowest-rated countries.

The index also noted a decline for Algeria since it first showed up in the ranking in the 1980s, when it was much closer to the top 100 countries.
