Rabat – Morocco’s Yassine Bounou has clinched another individual trophy at his club FC Sevilla, with the Spanish club announcing the Moroccan goalkeeper — also known in Spain’s top-tier football league as Bono — as the team’s Castor Player of the Month for January.
The new achievement confirms Bono’s current status as one of the world’s best goalkeepers. Last year, Bounou made history after he became the first Moroccan and Arab to win the Zamora trophy for the best goalkeeper in La Liga, Spain’s top-tier league.
Most recently, he was nominated among the three finalists of the Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper for 2022, which recognizes the outstanding performers in world football from between August 2021 to December 2022. The Moroccan goalkeeper is competing for this prestigious crown with Belgium’s Thibaut Courtois and Argentina’s Emiliano Martinez.
FIFA will announce the winner of the award on February 27 in Paris.
Bono’s consistently impressive form with Sevilla and the Moroccan national team has won him a legion of admirers around the world, and his popularity with football fans and observers appears to have reached new heights in the aftermath of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
During the global competition, the Sevilla goalkeeper made international headlines with his stellar performances with Morocco. He was particularly inspired and outstanding in Morocco’s victory over Spain in the round of 16 and defeat of Portugal in the quarterfinals, making him one of the main architects of Morocco’s historic qualification for the World Cup semifinals.
In nominating Bono among the top 3 goalkeepers in the world over the past year, FIFA described the Sevilla star as having been an “instrumental part” of Morocco’s World Cup run. “The 31-year-old made two wonderful penalty saves in Morocco’s round of 16 shoot-out success over Spain and also shone as his team shocked Portugal 1-0 in the quarter-finals,” FIFA said.
