Rabat – King Mohammed V has ordered the immediate launch of a solidarity campaign for the benefit of the Moroccan population affected by the ongoing cold snap and heavy snowfall, the Mohammed VI Foundation for Solidarity indicated in a statement.
The monarch “has given his high instructions for the implementation of an emergency aid operation, following the heavy snowfall and significant drop in temperatures that occurred on the evening of February 17, in the provinces of Zagora, Ouarzazate, and Taroudant,” said the statement.
The campaign will particularly target those living in mountainous and remote villages, and provide them with “emergency humanitarian aid.”
The affected population will receive aid kits, consisting of food products, and blankets. They will also benefit from “adapted social support and local medical care.”
The foundation will begin delivering the aid by air starting on Saturday, February 18. Aircraft of the Royal Armed Forces will be mobilized in this respect, and will take off from the airport of Casablanca.
The foundation will also mobilize helicopters, with the aim of delivering aid to families living in remote areas.
In addition, the foundation will deploy a “dedicated team” of social workers and doctors, in coordination with local authorities and departments. The team will seek to “meet the needs” of the population residing in the three affected regions.
The initiative comes after cold snaps, heavy rain, and snowfall hit several regions across the country, many of which are not prepared to deal with such harsh weather conditions.
Last month, King Mohammed VI led a similar humanitarian campaign for the benefit of the populations of the Great and Middle Atlas, who were also heavily affected by cold snaps.
