Rabat – Moroccan NGO “Touche pas a mon enfant” (Do not touch my child) has praised the eight-year prison sentence to Spaniard Felix Ramos for his involvement in human trafficking, rape, and child abuse.
A statement from the organization said they “welcomed” the decision to uphold the sentence, adding that Ramos was also ordered to pay a MAD 60,000 ($5,800) fine for the victims.
“This case had generated wide media coverage for the rapes perpetrated on minors in a Tangier shelter in 2019, and had seen several twists,” the statement continued.
Congratulating the outcome of the case the statement read: “We salute the work of the judicial authorities who conducted this investigation with rigor and impartiality.”
The sentence was initially decided in 2020, but the Court of Appeal in Tetouan granted a reduction to three years in prison for the defendant’s “health problems and need for medical treatment.”
The reduced sentence was denounced by the NGO, who said in their latest statement that they mobilized to intervene in Morocco’s civil institutions and appeal for the reduced sentence to be overturned.
“Thanks to the mobilization of our members and that of the Moroccan Association for Human Rights, the case was referred to cassation and the sentence of eight years’ imprisonment and compensation to the victims of MAD 60,000 were confirmed,” the statement said.
The NGO continued to note that a sentence for a case like this could entail 20 years in prison, but that they hoped the eight-year sentence would serve as a deterrent to anyone who might commit such acts against children.
They added that they will continue to work to protect minors from abuse and violence.
When returning to Morocco from Spain in 2019, Ramos was arrested in Tangier for fraud, before a 19-year old young man also accused him of raping him.
