Rabat – Royal Air Maroc has announced the cancellation of more flights from and to France due to ongoing pension reform strikes in the European country.
“Following the public service strike notice in France on March 28 and 29, 2023, relayed by the unions of the French DGAC, all airlines were asked to reduce their flight scheduled for these two days,” Royal Air Maroc said in a statement today.
The carrier added that its customers whose flights are affected can be transferred to other flights.
It further said that ticket holders who are not wishing to travel through the alternative flights can either receive a refund or change their flight date from and to the same destination or any other destination within the Royal Air Maroc network in Europe.
“It should be noted that for any change of destination, any difference in taxes will be borne by the passenger,” the statement noted.
Protests have been sweeping streets across France for weeks following President Macron’s dismissal of protests against his unpopular proposal to reform the French retirement system. As part of the proposed reforms, Macron wants to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64.
The protests have been met by excessive use of force by French police, who have been accused of using their batons to beat protesters – including children, the elderly, and women.
Many videos have captured police violence against protesters, with the Council of Europe’s human rights denouncing police brutality.
Dunja Mijatovic, the Council’s human rights commissioner, has emphasized that people wishing to peacefully protest should be protected from police brutality.
She also called on France to respect the right to protest, describing the French police’s attacks against demonstrators as “worrying.”
“Violent incidents have occurred, some of which have targeted the forces of law and order. But sporadic acts of violence by some demonstrators or other reprehensible acts committed by others during a protest cannot justify excessive use of force by agents of the state,” she said in a statement last week on Friday.
