Rabat – Morocco’s national police department (DGSN) thwarted an attempt to traffick five tonnes and 438 kilograms through the port of Tangier Med on Saturday.
According to a statement from DGSN, the substantial drug shipment of Cannabis was being transported using a cargo truck. The operation was coordinated with customs authorities.
Initial reports indicate the tuck was subjected to border inspection after the truck driver presented fake documents prompting the police to inspect the truck using trained dogs.
During the inspection, the police found special-made hidden compartments inside the truck made to conceal the drugs.
Following an investigation, the police department concluded that the drug shipment was in fact destined for international export.
The investigation also led to the arrest of the truck driver, a 45-year-old male who was placed under the custody of the public prosecutor. The investigation is ongoing to unveil any possible ties to other perpetrators.
