Rabat – While the exact day of the Eid Al Fitr is still not known, the Moroccan government announced on Saturday that the holiday for the religious festival will extend to Monday, April 24.
According to a statement from the government, the exceptional holiday concerns public servants and all public institutions.
Eid Al Fitr is the day marking the end of the month-long fasting in Ramadan. As the month is based on the lunar calendar, the exact day of Eid Al Fitr in Morocco won’t be known until the eve of the festival. Initial estimates indicate that the holiday should fall on Friday or Saturday next week.
The holiday carries significant religious and cultural value in Morocco similar to other majority-Muslim countries, and the occasion is celebrated as a public holiday.
On the morning of Eid Al Fitr, Muslims perform a special prayer in congregation called Salat El Eid. After the prayers, it is customary for families to gather around a special morning breakfast that unusually includes traditional dishes that vary depending on the culture.
During this holiday, families in the Arab world exchange visits. Pre-holiday shopping for children’s clothes is also common, as children usually display their new garments on the day of Eid, while adults mostly opt for traditional clothing.
Eid Al Fitr is one of the two holidays in the Islamic religion. The other one is Eid Al Adha, which usually takes place two months after.
