Rabat – Morocco has condemned the raid of some Knesset members, as well as Israeli extremists, of the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, describing it as a “flagrant violation” of the city’s historic and legal status.
A source from the North African country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs notably described the raid as an “unaccepted provocation” that could offend Muslim sentiments and lead to more tensions and complications in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The Israeli Knesset members’ actions could also lead to an obstruction of international efforts to de-escalate the conflict and negatively affect peace efforts in the region, the same source added.
Members of the Knesset, including a government minister, sang the Israeli national anthem in front of Al Aqsa’s iconic golden dome, ahead of the “Flag March,” a day where far-right orthodox jews in Israel provocatively march through the city.
In addition to the singing of the national anthem, a large number of illegal Israeli settlers responded to calls from far-right groups to desecrate the mosque.
The mosque compound has been turned into a “military base” with Muslims being banned from entry and worship, an eyewitness told news outlet Felesteen.
Israeli authorities have deployed thousands of soldiers and activated three layers of defense systems in anticipation of the march.
According to Israeli media, the march will be headed by seven ministers, including far-right Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir.
