Rabat – The Atlas Lions are set to demonstrate that they are still the best in Africa as they face off against Bafana Bafana today at 4:00 GMT+1 at the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Head coach Walid Regragui emphasized the team’s determination to establish themselves as the best on the continent during a press conference before the match.
Regragui emphasized that Bafana Bafana are a good team, acknowledging their talent, particularly in attack. He underlined that today’s game will be a challenging one for both teams, despite having already secured their spots in the AFCON.
“AFCON is one of the biggest and toughest competitions, necessitating thorough preparation. Our match against the South African team will undoubtedly enhance our performance in this grand tournament,” Regragui asserted.
Addressing the physical condition of Moroccan players, Regragui noted the injuries sustained by individuals like Ounahi, while others, like Sofyan Amrabat, are fatigued from their participation in the European championships, rendering them unavailable for today’s match.
Additionally, Regragui revealed that several players have been selected to represent Morocco in the upcoming U23 Africa Cup of Nations, slated to take place this month.
Expressing his delight at representing Morocco in South Africa, midfielder Ilias Chair highlighted the team’s determination to fight for their national jersey and keep up the spirit displayed during the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
“Mentally, we are prepared, and we are well acquainted with our South African opponents, who boast considerable continental experience,” Chair added confidently.
Meanwhile, South Africa’s coach, Hugo Broos, welcomed the opportunity to face a formidable team like Morocco, acknowledging the potential for valuable learning even in the event of a defeat.

“We are playing a game against a very strong opponent … I think for the moment Morocco is maybe the best team in Africa,” the coach stated, acknowledging the Atlas Lions’ impressive performance in the 2022 World Cup held in Qatar.
In their last outing, Morocco played a friendly match against Cape Verde, which ended in a goalless draw. The match, held at Rabat’s Moulay Abdellah Stadium, was part of the team’s preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier game against South Africa.
Regragui expressed his hope that the Atlas Lions will exhibit an improved performance compared to their previous encounter with Cape Verde. However, he acknowledged the challenges of demanding a higher level from players who have endured the fatigue of a long season.
Having secured their place in the final phase of the continental tournament in March following a 2-2 draw between South Africa and Liberia in Group K, the Moroccan national team currently leads the group standings with 6 points.
