Rabat – Reckless Ashura celebrations claimed the life of another victim on Thursday around midnight in Sale, as police arrested a Sub-Saharan national suspected of causing the death of a five-year-old girl, according to a press release from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).
According to the same source, the defendant is residing illegally in Morocco.
It added that the accused threw a small butane gas canister into the middle of a blazing bonfire in the Sidi Moussa district in Sale.
The young girl was injured by the debris after the cylinder exploded, and died while being rushed to a hospital.
The perpetrator was apprehended by the police immediately after they were called to the scene, and is currently being held in custody for investigation, which is being conducted by the public prosecutor’s office.
On the same day, a tiny gas cylinder used during Ashura celebrations in Settat exploded, killing a 17-year-old and injuring another minor.
Authorities in the area claim that several young people displayed “reckless behavior” while celebrating Ashura with the gas cylinder.
