Rabat – Elements of the judicial police of Casablanca’s prefecture successfully seized on July 24 a batch of 39,044 units of firecrackers, in addition to an amount of MAD 37,900 ($3,800) in possession of a 52-year-old man and his son aged 20, according to a security source.

The suspects were found in flagrante delicto for trafficking the smuggled firecrackers in the Derb Douam neighborhood in Casablanca.

After searching the suspects’ house, the Casablanca police seized over 39,000 units of firecrackers and artificial shooting stars, as well as an amount of MAD 37,900, seemingly the proceeds of the suspect’s criminal activities.

More investigation and search led to the discovery of a lot of substances and equipment especially used for making these firecrackers and fireworks. As their arrest comes mere days ahead of the commemoration day of “Ashura,” which is expected to fall on the evening of July 27, it is understood that the suspects were likely looking to sell their products during this festive week.

Police also found at the suspects’ house 49 liters of chemical products, 13,76 kilograms of potassium nitrate, 14 kilograms of sodium nitrate, tens of plastic containers, tools, jackets, caps, and jerseys with fans club logos of Casablanca-based football team.

The suspects were held in custody under the supervision of the public prosecution office to identify the origin of the seized products, as well as the reasons behind their association with these banned substances.

These police investigations and searches are part of Moroccan security services’ continued efforts to fight against the trafficking of explosive products, and protect people’s lives from the danger of these explosives.

Only last April, the police arrested a person in Casablanca in possession of 360 firecrackers with the aim of using them in sports-related vandalism.

The products were found in the suspect’s house following a police inspection in the “Ain Borja” neighborhood, with investigations later establishing that the suspect intended to use the firecrackers on the occasion of the second leg of the CAF Champions League quarter-final match between Raja CA and Al Ahly SC.
