Rabat – Moroccan police arrested on July 23 a British national of Moroccan descent at Tangier’s Ibn Battouta Airport for alleged kidnapping, assault, and theft while using a knife, according to a security source.
The 26-year-old suspect had tricked two people, including a Dutch national of Moroccan origin, in an apartment in Tangier.
The defendant pretended to be able to convert a sum of money in Moroccan dirham into a digital currency, before kidnapping the two victims using violence, then robbing them of their belongings. The suspect was assisted by other accomplices, the same source added.
The investigations conducted for this criminal affair led to the identification of the prime suspect before attempting to leave the territory, thus leading to his arrest at the Tangier’s airport.
The suspect was held in custody for a judicial investigation led by the judicial police brigade of Bni Makada district in Tangier, and under the supervision of the public prosecution office.
The investigation is expected to uncover all the details of this criminal activity and arrest all the suspect’s accomplices, the source concluded.
A similar case made headlines in Morocco in September last year, wth reports speaking of the arrest at the Tanger-Med port of a British national who was wanted by the United Kingdom for involvement in serious crimes.
The British individual was allegedly involved in committing murder and violating laws relating to the possession and use of firearms.
The General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) stated that the suspect was arrested while trying to enter Moroccan territory via the Tanger-Med port with false identity documents.
