Rabat – On Wednesday, Spanish airline Binter, which is based in the Canary Islands, inaugurated a direct air connection between the city of Tangier and Las Palmas in the Canary Islands.
The first customers to use this route, which aims to increase the airline’s presence in Morocco, arrived at Tangier’s Ibn Battouta airport at around 1 p.m. after a nearly four-hour journey.
Upon landing, the Binter aircraft was given the customary “water salute,” and a ceremony was organized for the passengers and the crew.
Every Wednesday, an ATR72 aircraft with a 72-passenger capacity will fly between Tangier and the Canary Islands.
“Today we are celebrating the launch of a new air route between Tangier and the Canary Islands, which will be serviced by Binter, the leader in air transport to the Canary Islands for over 30 years,” stressed Uwe Kohn, Head of External Market Development at Binter, in a statement to Moroccan News Agency (MAP).
He added that the route, which includes eight destinations, has improved the company’s position in the North African region closest to the Canary Islands.
This initiative, according to Kohn, is a result of Binter’s exceptional working relationship with the Moroccan National Tourist Office (ONMT) and is a component of the implementation of a collaboration agreement between the two parties with the aim of bolstering their commitment to the recovery of tourism and connectivity with the Canary Islands.
In 2023, the airline will offer more than 78,000 seats on 36 weekly flights, serving 11 routes with eight stops in the North Africa region closest to the Canary Islands.
The eight Moroccan destinations include Fez, Marrakech, Agadir, Guelmim, Laayoune, and Dakhla, to which Essaouira and Tangier will be added starting in July.

“We are delighted with the opening of the new route by Spanish airline Binter, which will link Tangier to Las Palmas once a week for the first time,” said Mohamed Bahaj, Director of Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport, noting that the route will help boost Tangier airport’s air service, which currently has 25 connections with European airports.
An extraordinary performance is predicted for this year, according to the official, who noted that over 800,000 people have passed through Tangier Airport since the beginning of 2023, an increase of 40% over the same period in 2019.
According to a press release from Binter, this summer will mark the return of the direct flight connections that the airline began operating in 2022 from Gran Canaria to Fez and Guelmim, as well as from Madeira to Marrakech. These flights will also resume in 2023 and will once again be part of the airline’s summer program.
