Rabat – Morocco has been expanding its asparagus exports beyond Spain, new data from agriculture-focused website EastFruit said.

The new data suggested that Morocco is the world’s 19th largest exporter of asparagus, with exporters selling over 500 tonnes of the vegetable in the 2022-23 season.

The export value amounted to $1 million.

Spain tops the list of European importers, but the North African country has been expanding its market to reach Germany, Spain and the Netherlands.

The three European countries, according to East Fruit, entered the top five biggest importers of asparagus in the world, with Morocco still focusing mostly on Spain.

The data also listed Spain as one of the biggest exporters globally, positioning the European country in the fourth position, behind Mexico, Peru, and the US.

“As a rule, European asparagus is exported in April, while exports in January-March are low. Thus, the period between January and April is the best for Moroccan exports,” the news outlet added.

According to Kenyan agritech platform Selina Wamucii, the price of asparagus exports per kilogram from Morocco was different from one year to another within the past five years.

In 2017, the price for one kilogram was set at $2.13 while it reached $2.39 in 2018 and $0.96 in 2019.

“The price then increased to 2.14 US$ per kg in 2020 and 2021 saw a slight decrease to 1.93 US$ per kg,” the data added.
