Rabat – Tensions in the occupied West Bank escalated once again on Tuesday as Israeli troops carried out a raid on the Aqbat Jabr refugee camp in Jericho, resulting in the tragic deaths of Qusai al-Walaji, 16, and Mohammed Najum al-Omar, 25, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

The deadly incident unfolded when Israeli forces launched a violent operation, storming into several homes within the camp with the intention of apprehending residents. Tragically, the firing of live bullets  struck down the two victims. Despite efforts to save them, both al-Walaji and al-Omar succumbed to their injuries at the Jericho Government Hospital.

The exact circumstances leading to the confrontation remain unclear. While armed clashes between camp residents and Israeli forces erupted during the raid, it is yet to be ascertained whether the deceased men were directly involved in the confrontations, Al Jazeera reported on Tuesday.

Aqbat Jabr refugee camp, housing approximately 30,000 individuals, holds the distinction of being the largest refugee camp in the occupied West Bank in terms of land area. Its history dates back to 1948, when it was established to provide shelter to those displaced during the Nakba, a term referring to the mass displacement of Palestinians following the establishment of the State of Israel.

Recent months have seen an unfortunate recurrence of Israeli military raids in the Aqbat Jabr camp, adding to the concerns of the residents who have long endured the interplay of displacement and violent conflict.

Renowned for its status as a tourist destination, Jericho has historically been less prone to Israeli violence in comparison to other parts of the West Bank. However, the persistent raids in the refugee camp have reversed this reputation, drawing international attention to the volatile situation.

The toll of violence in the occupied Palestinian territories in 2023 has reached distressing levels. With a total of 176 lives lost in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, this year has tragically earned a place as one of the bloodiest periods in recent memory. Additionally, 36 individuals have lost their lives in the Gaza Strip, underscoring the grim reality facing Palestinians on multiple fronts.
