Rabat – Moroccan comedian Gad Elmaleh has taken to social media to express his unwavering support for Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses ahead of their clash with France in the round of 16 of the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
The comedian’s words of encouragement, echoing his previous support for Morocco during the men’s 2022 World Cup in Qatar, struck a chord with many Moroccan football fans.
However, Elmaleh’s support for Morocco did not go unnoticed by French social media users, many of whom quickly expressed their discontent.
Many criticized the comedian for openly backing the Moroccan team over the French national side, deeming it a betrayal of France, where his career took off.
“Go back down there. You whistle French money, and you support Morocco,” said a French social media user, expressing a sense of perceived contradiction in Elmaleh’s stance.
Others argued that as a public figure with a considerable following, he should remain neutral in international sporting events, particularly when pitted against his country of residence.

However, supporters of the comedian hailed his dedication to his heritage and his right to support any team he chooses.
“He is Moroccan. It’s normal that he supports his country,” said a Moroccan Instagram user.
In addition, Moroccan fans commended his consistent stance, saying that it showcases his commitment to his Moroccan identity, regardless of potential consequences.
“Bravo! you are a true Moroccan. we are proud of you,” another social media user commented.
This is not the first time the comedian has found himself at the center of such a debate. During the men’s World Cup in 2022, he also declared his support for Morocco when they faced France in the semi-finals, leading to a similar uproar.
“I support Morocco, I support my country of birth,” said Elmaleh last year in an interview with RMC.
