Rabat – Morocco’s tourism sector is experiencing a remarkable comeback as the country reports a record-breaking 92% increase in tourist arrivals at its borders during the first half of 2023.

According to the Tourism Observatory, approximately 6.5 million tourists visited the country in the first half of 2023, surpassing the figures from the same period the previous year by over 3 million tourists.

The growth in tourism is mainly due to the recovery of the global tourism market, and the economies of visiting tourists, compared to the same period last year.

Tourism from France led the way with an impressive 75% rise in the number of tourists, with an additional 415,000 tourists. Arrivals from Spain also witnessed a remarkable 180% increase, with 407,000 more visitors.

The United Kingdom, Italy, and the United States also contributed significantly to the surge, with a 100%, 141%, and 111% increase in the influx of tourists respectively.

June 2023 proved to be a pivotal month for the tourism industry as the number of arrivals at border posts surpassed 1.4 million tourists, a 20% rise compared to June 2022.

Despite these encouraging trends, tourist arrivals from certain markets dropped. The amount of tourists from Belgium and Israel declined by  12% and 22% respectively in terms of tourist arrivals.

The Tourism Observatory’s report also shed light on the contribution of Morocco’s three main airports, Marrakech Menara, Mohammed V, and Agadir Al Massira, which collectively received 3.2 million tourists, accounting for nearly half (49%) of all tourist arrivals.

The report further highlights that all three airports saw positive results compared to the end of June 2022, with Marrakech Menara recording an impressive 91% rise, Mohammed V a 41% increase, and Agadir Al Massira a 79% growth in the number of travelers.
