Rabat – In a ceremony held on the sidelines of the 67th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) at the United Nations Offices in Austria, three Moroccan doctoral students were honored for their contributions to the field of nuclear science.

Esaad Baddou, Meriem Lazrak, and Kaouther Ben Jeddou, students hailing from the joint unit of Kenitra’s Ibn Tofail University and the National Center for Nuclear Energy, Science, and Technology, were awarded the prize in the African Student Competition on the Benefits of Nuclear Science.

Their research encompassed diverse areas, ranging from using nuclear techniques to combat obesity, addressing micronutrient deficiencies, to exploring the effects of breastfeeding.

The Moroccan academics’ nomination files were selected from over 200 submissions from 19 African member states.

Present at the ceremony were IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi and Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Morocco in Vienna Azzedine Farhane, who commended the Moroccan researchers for their outstanding contributions to the field.

The competition, organized by the IAEA for the first time, aims to nurture the knowledge and interest of young students in the peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology.
