Rabat – The governor of Morocco’s Central Bank, Bank Al-Maghrib (BAM), Abdellatif Jouahri, announced today that the special earthquake fund that the country established to collect donations directed to affected areas has reached MAD 10 billion or $973.47 million.

Jouahri made the revelation during a press briefing following BAM’s council meeting today.

“We particularly appreciate the support expressed by sister central banks, which have encouraged their staff to donate and committed to matching each amount collected; I’m referring specifically to the French, American, and Arab central banks,” he said.

The establishment of the bank account was in line with the “high instructions” of King Mohammed VI, who requested the creation of a special bank account by the Public Treasury and Bank Al-Maghrib for the receipt of donations from citizens as well as private and public institutions who wish to contribute to earthquake recovery efforts.

The devastating earthquake has killed nearly 3,000 people and injured 5,500 people.
