Rabat – Moroccan international Ayoub El Kaabi scored a brace for his Greek club Olympiacos in the first round of the Europa League against German club Freiburg on September 21.
The match ended 3-2 in favor of Freiburg. However, with his two goals, the Moroccan striker took his tally to 6 goals for his team since joining last August.
El Kaabi’s first goal came towards the end of the first half in the 40th minute to level the score with the German team who had scored their first goal 9 minutes into the game.
Freiburg’s second goal came from a penalty kick by midfielder Vincenzo Grifo in the seventh minute of added time.
In the 74th minute, the Atlas Lion scored his team’s second goal, but the striker Maximilian Philipp added a third goal twelve minutes after El Kaabi’s equalizer.
Olympiacos is in Group A of the Europa League with West Ham United of England, Freiburg of Germany, and Backa Topola of Serbia.
Following the group’s opening matches, Olympiacos currently ranks in third place with zero points, while Freiburg ranks second with 3 points. At the top of the table is West Ham, who took 3 points in their first meeting with Backa Topola, which they won 3-1.
El Kaabi is among the players that the Moroccan head coach Walid Regragui recently called up for the matches against Liberia and Burkina Faso.
On September 12, the Moroccan national team won a friendly match against Burkina Faso 1-0 in the northern French city of Lens.
The match against Liberia was rescheduled after being canceled due to the violent earthquake that struck several regions of Morocco on September 8.
