Marrakech – Rugby fans from around the world came together on the evening of Thursday, September 14, to pay their respects to the victims of the devastating Al-Haoz earthquake in central Morocco and the catastrophic floods in Libya.

Prior to the kick-off of the highly anticipated Group A match between the French national team and Uruguay, a solemn minute of silence was observed as a gesture of solidarity and remembrance.

The Al-Haouz earthquake, which struck Morocco last Friday, and the destructive floods in Libya have left their mark on the global consciousness, stirring feelings of empathy and concern.

As the Rugby World Cup action unfolded in Lille, France, players, coaches, and fans took a pause to reflect on the immense loss and hardship faced by those affected by these natural disasters.

In an official statement, the International Rugby Federation expressed its condolences and heartfelt support for the people of Morocco and Libya. The moment of silence served as a poignant remembrance of the lives lost, the families torn apart, and the communities struggling to rebuild.

“The International Rugby Federation stands with the people of Morocco and Libya during these trying times,” the statement read. “This moment of solidarity reminds us of those who lost their lives or loved ones and all those affected by the earthquake in Morocco and the floods in Libya. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”

The poignant moment was a clear indication that the Rugby World Cup extends beyond the boundaries of sport, and the federation’s message sought to show that sport can be a platform for unity, compassion, and global togetherness.

The tournament brings together nations from all corners of the world, fostering camaraderie and mutual respect both on and off the field.

The International Rugby Federation called upon all teams participating in the France 2023 World Cup and the entire global rugby family to join in this moment of solidarity with the Moroccan and Libyan people in their hour of need. The powerful display of unity is a testament to the values that sport can instil in individuals and societies.
