Rabat – Jews from across Morocco gathered on Wednesday at the Beth El synagogue in Casablanca to pray, pleading with God to accept the victims in His holiness mercy and to give the victims’ families patience and comfort. They also prayed for those who have sustained injuries to recover quickly.
The Moroccan Jewish community also prayed to God to protect King Mohammed VI and grant success to the numerous efforts and actions he has undertaken as Morocco continues to mobilize to address the aftermath of last week’s tragic earthquake.
Additionally, they prayed for the well-being of the entire royal family, including Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan, Princess Lalla Khadija, and Prince Moulay Rachid.
“We consider tonight that we have lost people who are extremely close to us. We want to show the great closeness we have with the Moroccan people. Our people and our brothers,” Serge Berdugo, the Secretary-General of the Council of Jewish Communities, told the press.

“With a lot of pain, but at the same time with a lot of pride, we feel, like all Moroccans, the privilege of being part of a people that places such a great emphasis on solidarity, tolerance, friendship, and compassion,” Berdugo explained.
Berdugo added that a thorough program will be designed and implemented to alleviate the pain of people in need who have lost everything. Moroccan Jews, an important part of the Moroccan nation, want to join this beautiful wave of solidarity.
On Wednesday, Pope Francis offered his sincere condolences and prayers to those affected by the devastating earthquake that has killed close to 3,000 people.
According to Vatican News, the pope made a heartfelt plea in which he prayed that God give Morocco and its people “strength to recover after this terrible ‘ambush’ they have endured.”
