Rabat – Qatari Club Al-Sadd has decided to put an end to the Moroccan international center back Romain Saiss’ transfer to Stade Rennais in France, after they were not able to register him because the Qatari club’s foreign player quota had been exceeded.
According to Foot Mercato, Romain Saiss was close to a return to Ligue 1 with Stade Rennais. The 33-year-old defender was due to sign a one-year contract with Rennes, but Al-Sadd decided to block the move.
The club blocked the transfer two days before the end of the summer transfer window, explaining that a solution would be found quickly to put him on the list, so that he could become a fully-fledged player.
On July 24, Al-Sadd signed the defender’s services from Turkish club Besiktas, ahead of the Arab Club Championship, with a contract set to expire in June 2025.
In an interview with FootMercato, Saiss unveiled the reason for quitting the Turkish club, saying that the main pushing factor was coach Senol Gunes.
“Since he arrived, there’s been an accumulation of things that led me to decide to leave because I couldn’t trust a person like that,” Saiss said.
He went on to say that “you can’t make yourself look good to the press and then tell me the opposite in private,” in criticizing the coach.
