Rabat – Soufiane El Bakkali, a leading figure in Moroccan athletics, is taking part in the national blood donation campaign following the devastating earthquake that struck several regions of Morocco on September 8.

The Olympic and two-time world champion in the 3,000 meters steeplechase announced his participation in the campaign immediately following confirmation of his absence from the Diamond League finals, of which he is the current titleholder.

The Diamond League finals will be held over two days: September 16 and 17 at the Eugene Meeting or Prefontaine Classic in the USA.

On his Instagram account, El Bakkali shared a post informing his fans that he would not be taking part in the Diamond League Final.

“Today, my presence at the Diamond League final in Eugene in the US was not confirmed for reasons beyond my control,” he said. “Immediately after this confirmation, the first thing I did was to participate in the large national campaign to donate blood for the benefit of our compatriots affected by the earthquake.”

El Bakkali made sure to show respect to the families of the victims, writing: “I extend my sincere condolences and sympathy to all the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to all those injured.”

According to the latest official figures, the devastating earthquake that struck central Morocco late last week has so far resulted in 3,000 fatalities and left over 5,000 others suffering from injuries of varying severities.

People across Morocco showed their support and solidarity in the aftermath of the tragic earthquake, with numerous governmental and non-governmental organizations having mobilized to contribute to the rescue and relief efforts.

In addition, volunteers and several rescue teams from Morocco’s partner countries, including Spain, Qatar and the United Kingdom, have mobilized to provide humanitarian assistance to families affected by the earthquake.
