Rabat – Morocco’s Atlas Lions have climbed one place in September’s FIFA Men’s Rankings, ranking 13th out of the 211 national teams featured.
The team gained one spot compared to the last July rankings where they were 14th, following a 1-0 win in a friendly against Burkina Faso on September 12.
Morocco tops the list of African football teams on the ranking, followed by Senegal, Tunisia, Cameroon, Nigeria, Egypt, and Algeria.
Topping September’s ranking are world champions Argentina, followed by World Cup finalists France , Brazil, England, and Belgium.
Croatia is sixth on the ranking, followed by the Netherlands, Portugal, Italy, and Spain to make up the rest of the top ten.
The North African country’s football team peaked with a ranking of 11th in December 2022, following their historic appearance in last year’s world Cup in Qatar.
During the competition, Morocco achieved a historic fourth-place finish, producing several upsets against Belgium, Portugal, and Spain.
Morocco finished the competition with only two defeats against France in the semi-finals, and Croatia in the third-place ranking game.
The Atlas Lions will play again during the international break in October, during which they are set to face Liberia in an African Cup of Nations qualifier.
The game was initially scheduled for September 9 but was postponed due to the devastating earthquake that struck central Morocco on September 8.
Morocco’s goal now is to secure the AFCON title, with head coach Walid Regragui determined that this will be his next objective following the successful World Cup journey.
