Rabat – Elements of Morocco’s National Judicial Police Brigade (BNPJ), in coordination with the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST), arrested on Wednesday individuals suspected of links to international drug trafficking networks with 7.4 tonnes of cannabis resin in the suburbs of Mohammedia and El Jadida.
Along with the cargo, two speedboats, five boats, three engines, and 107 fuel containers were seized.
In a press release, the DGSN stated that the operations carried out in this case led to the seizure of a first consignment on board a commercial vehicle on the highway between Bouznika and Mohammedia on Tuesday.
The cargo contained 4 tonnes and 168 kilograms of cannabis, for a total of 11.5 tonnes from the two arrests on Tuesday and Wednesday.
After abandoning the vehicle to avoid arrest, the driver took the motorway linking Bouznika and Mohammedia and fled the scene in the opposite direction of traffic, noted the DGSN statement.
However, the driver was apprehended along with an accomplice at the entrance to the town of Ksar El Kebir.
Initial investigations by the BNPJ revealed an extension of this network to the village of Lamharza in Bir Jdid, and four other suspects were arrested in this town near El Jadida.
The suspects were remanded in custody for further investigation, under the supervision of the Public Prosecutor’s office in order to establish the alleged links between the arrested group and drug trafficking networks in Morocco and abroad.
