Rabat – The United Nations Security Council has once again failed to reach a consensus in addressing the ongoing war that Israel is waging against Palestinians, despite the deepening humanitarian crisis in the embattled Gaza Strip.
On Wednesday, Russia and China exercised their veto power to block a United States resolution that aimed to secure a “humanitarian ceasefire” in Gaza for the delivery of vital aid.
The resolution also included a call for putting an end to the arming of Hamas and other groups in Gaza, as well as specific mention of “States’ inherent right to self defence.”
In addition to Russia and China, who hold veto powers in the Security Council, the UAE also voted against the resolution.

Another resolution proposed by Russia also called for a ceasefire and condemned the surprise offensive on Israel by Hamas, but also called for “the immediate cancellation by Israeli forces of the evacuation order for civilians to head into southern Gaza.”
The resolution received four votes in favor from Russia, the UAE, China, and Gabon, and two against from the US and UK. Nine members abstained from voting, meaning the resolution could not gather enough votes in favor to pass.
This setback comes as a severe humanitarian crisis continues to unfold in the Palestinian territories of Gaza and the West Bank.
The United States had initially put forward a draft resolution over the weekend, which was criticized due to its failure to recognize the dire humanitarian situation and its unequivocal support for “Israel’s right to self-defense.”

Israel’s ongoing siege on Gaza, marked by relentless bombings, has taken a devastating toll on the enclave’s residents. Palestinian authorities report that over 7,000 Palestinians have been killed, with more than 17,000 injured.
The situation on the ground escalated further as Israeli troops and tanks conducted a substantial overnight ground incursion into Gaza. This maneuver has raised concerns about the imminent possibility of a full-scale ground invasion following almost three weeks of relentless airstrikes in the besieged Palestinian territory.
