PAGE Green Crossroads 2023: Leading the Way to Morocco’s Green Transition

Rabat- The second PAGE Green Crossroad conference, held on Tuesday at the Hotel Hassan Tour in Rabat, Morocco, placed a spotlight on the incorporation of a sustainable and inclusive economy into Morocco’s key sectors.

The event provided a significant platform for exploring Morocco’s commitment to fostering a sustainable and environmentally friendly economy. It brought together a diverse group of experts, leaders, and UN representatives, all united in their shared goal of advancing Morocco’s journey towards a greener and more climate-conscious economy.

Ali Benrayane, the National Coordinator of PAGE in Morocco, ONUDI, highlighted the significance of this event. He emphasized that it’s the second occasion where various stakeholders in Morocco’s green economy transition, including those from the private sector, civil society, and government, have come together.

“We are here to exchange our experience and expertise on how we can help and support Morocco’s transition toward a greener economy by having impactful actions in different key sectors,” Benrayne told Morocco World News (MWN) on the sidelines of the conference.

Also speaking during the official opening of the 2nd edition of the “Page Green Crossroads” conference, Hasnaa Chihabi, Head of the Educational Programs Department at the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, stressed Morocco’s commitment to a sustainable economic transition.

“This day is our goal. It is an educational and networking event aimed at deepening our understanding of ways to accelerate the transition toward a green economy,” she later told MWN in an interview following the conference.

She emphasized the importance of collaboration among various stakeholders, including government agencies, the private sector, and civil society organizations, to achieve a green economy.

The Significance of PAGE for Morocco

Asad Naqvi, head of the economic and trade policy team at the United Nations Environment Program, stressed the importance of cooperation and partnerships to achieve a more diverse and competitive economy that can access international markets for Moroccan products.

“We are always stronger together, that is the key message coming from the partnership,” he said. “What we aspire for is that the government and their ministries will also come together, then the civil society, the private sector, and media create a momentum environment in which all the issues can be discussed.”

Naqvi’s vision is to prepare for future challenges and global trends, aligning them with national development plans to create a sustainable and green economy.

“If you are prepared, it becomes the biggest opportunity for Morocco to access the international market which will lead to new and better jobs for young people especially. Which will push the whole economy forward,” he told Morocco World News.

The PAGE Green Crossroads Conference, with its variety of panel discussions and side events, was a valuable opportunity to foster collaboration with Morocco’s UN partners.

The main objective of the event is to highlight the mechanisms of the Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE), while stimulating discussion, raising the profile of green initiatives, and increasing media awareness of green economy issues.
