Rabat – German football club Bayern Munich featured Moroccan international footballer Noussair Mazraoui on its lineup following pressure on the Atlas Lion for his pro-Palestine position amid Israeli aggression.
The club announced today its lineup for Tuesday’s game against Turkish club Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League group stage.
A video also showed the Atlas Lion taking part in the training campaign in preparation for tomorrow’s game.
Last week, Mazraoui faced pressure from both the club and German media for his support for Palestine against Israel’s unrelenting and merciless bombing in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
Renowned sports journalist Fabrizio Romano said last week that the Atlas Lion was not training with the team, as he held discussions with the club’s management over his pro-Palestine post.
A day following Romano’s post, the club issued a vague statement, confirming that the management held discussions with the Moroccan international.
“The reason for the discussion was Mazraoui’s Instagram posts in connection with the terror attack against Israel almost two weeks ago, which led to irritation and criticism,” the club said.
While the club said that it refuses bringing the Middle East conflict to the club, the statement also publicly expressed Bayern Munich’s support for Israel.
“FC Bayern stands by Germany’s Jewish community and by Israel’s side. Nothing justifies the murder of children and families,” the statement read.
The statement issued last week on Friday, however, failed to mention any support for Palestine and Palestinian civilians, who have been facing relentless bombardment by Israeli occupation forces since October 7.
The Israeli aggression killed at least 5,000 people as of today, while over 15,000 people have been wounded.
With uproar and frustration mounting worldwide, including among international footballers that condemn Israeli aggression, several European clubs have put pressure on their footballers – many of whom were suspended.
Algerian football player Youcef Atal was among the latest players to be suspended for his pro-Palestine post by his French club Nice.
