Rabat – As of October 23, there will be no more flights between Morocco and Israel. The Israeli airlines El Al and Arkia have suspended their flights between Marrakech and Tel Aviv until further notice, the Moroccan news website Le360 reported today.
Fourteen flights scheduled by the two Israeli airlines this week between Marrakech and Tel Aviv, including three on Monday, will be affected by this suspension, which came into effect today, October 23.
Royal Air Maroc (RAM) also decided to suspend its flights between Casablanca and Tel Aviv on October 7, the day hostilities broke out between the Hamas movement and Israel. This suspension will remain in effect until October 30.
El Al and Arkia, which had decided to maintain their routes between Morocco and Israel, operated 17 flights between Marrakech and Tel Aviv last week, with eight arrivals at Marrakech Menara International Airport and nine departures at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport.
These flights, operated by Boeing aircraft for El Al and Airbus for Arkia, carried between 174 and 239 passengers each.
On October 10, Reuters reported that the aforementioned Israeli airlines, as well as Israir, increased their flight schedules to bring home reservists.
But the possibility of more violence has also heightened industry concerns about staffing shortages.
Israel announced on October 10 that it had activated an unprecedented 300,000 reserve troops and issued an evacuation order to the Palestinian enclave of Gaza as a possible prelude to launching a ground invasion of the Gaza Strip.
