Rabat – Four members of the French club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), namely Ousmane Dembele, Randal Kolo Muani, Layvin Kurzawa, and Achraf Hakimi have been suspended for one game for taking up offensive chants against fans of Olympique Marseille.
The PSG players were suspended by the French league (LFP) disciplinary committee after they were caught on camera performing an insulting song to the Marseille’s Ligue 1 team supporters.
After the game, the Parisian players gathered in front of the Auteuil stand to celebrate the 4-0 victory. During these celebrations, they were seen chanting insults at their opponents.
On Sunday, the four players expressed regret for their actions, claiming they had let themselves “get carried away with the euphoria” of victory.
“We are well aware of the impact of our actions and our words on the public, notably the youngest who dream of watching a football match,” the players said. “In the future, we will do everything to further respect our duty to set an example.”
Due to homophobic slurs directed at Marseille fans, PSG will also be forced to close the Auteuil stand at Parc des Princes for one match.
Although the club deemed the punishment “excessive,” it does not plan to appeal the decision.
PSG’s match against Olympique Marseille on September 24 ended 4-0, with Hakimi having scored in the 8th minute.
The forward Randal Kolo Muani scored the second goal in the 37th minute. In the second half, Goncalo Ramos added a brace, one in the 47th minute and the other in the 89th minute.
