Rabat – The far-right, anti-Islam party of Geert Wilders has won the Dutch election, reports have shown.
Exit polls have suggested that the “Freedom Party” has won 35 seats in parliament, to comfortably win the election.
If confirmed, these final results may pose a significant threat to the Muslim community in the Netherlands, due to Wilders’ party’s notoriety for its anti-Islam stance.
Wilders has been known for his Islamophobic remarks against Islam and Muslims, particularly targeting Moroccans living in the Netherlands.
In 2019, the Dutch politician stirred controversy online after posting a photo of a Moroccan flag in a pool, saying: “We want our pools back! Make them safe for women and children again.”
Wilders has been condemned for calling Moroccans “terrorists” on X, formerly Twitter. His attacks having targeted Morocco and Moroccans for decades, in 2017 the controversial politician made headlines, as he called Moroccans “scum”.
“The Moroccan scum in Holland…once again not all are scum…but there is a lot of Moroccan scum in Holland who make the streets unsafe, mostly young people…and that should change,” he said.
In 2014, Wilders was convicted by Dutch courts in 2014, following an Islamophobic rally where he led anti-Islam chants, asking supporters whether they wanted “more or fewer Moroccans in the Netherlands.”
As part of his Islamophobic campaign, he has also pledged to ban the Quran, if he were to come to power.
