Rabat – Morocco’s Ministry of Tourism and the Maison de l’Artisan (House of Artisan) signed two partnership agreements with Royal Air Maroc and UPS Morocco, with the aim of supporting the development of handicraft exports.
The agreements aim to apply preferential rates to the international transportation of Moroccan handicraft products for those registered in the National Crafts Registry (RNA) and the Local Registry of Handicraft Product Exporters.
The initiative is part of the ministry’s efforts to boost exports of handicraft products.
During the signing ceremony, Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts Fatm-Zahra Ammor stressed the cultural and economic importance of the handicraft sector. She highlighted the sector’s 7% contribution to the country’s Gross Domestic Product.
The sector also employs 2.4 million people, accounting for 22% of the active population.
The minister further emphasized the sector’s potential, noting that its exports reached a historic record of MAD 1 billion ($98.72 million) last year.
The sector is witnessing a continuing trend this year, with an 8% growth compared to 2022, Ammor added, highlighting the ministry’s commitment to intensifying efforts to boost exports in the sector.
Tarik Sadik, the General Director of the Maison de L’Artisan welcomed the initiative, stressing the significant role the partnership plays in promoting Moroccan craftsmanship through different channels.
For him, the agreement will allow artisans registered in the RNA to benefit from preferential rates for their international transportation activities.
Yassine Berrada, Vice President of Cargo at Royal Air Maroc also expressed satisfaction with the agreement, stating that it will contribute to the development of exports in the Moroccan handicraft sector, by offering preferential rates to artisans.
Benoit Biard, the General Manager for North Africa at UPS echoed the same sentiment, underlining the role of the agreement to support handicraft exports worldwide.
