Rabat – Morocco’s Ministry of the Interior announced the launch of the operation to register the victims of the September 8 earthquake, noting that it will continue until January 16, according to a press release issued on November 21.
The decision follows a decree from the Head of Government, published in the government’s gazette, which declared the earthquake as a “catastrophic event,” the same source added.
The order designated six regions as “disaster areas,” namely the provinces of Al Haouz, Taroudant, Chichaoua, Ouarzazate, Azilal, and the prefecture of Marrakech, including a total of 169 municipalities.
It also officially paves the way for the Solidarity Fund against Catastrophic Events (FSEC) to be activated to compensate the victims of the earthquake, and for insurance companies to set up a coverage scheme.
The Ministry of Interior has called on victims of the earthquake to register with the offices set up in the concerned regions, or to do so online on the website.
The registration can be made by victims or their legal guardians, who will receive a receipt with a reference number once signed up.
Several types of contracts are eligible for compensation for property damage or bodily injury, provided they are located in one of the disaster zones.
These include insurance contracts covering damage to property, such as multi-risk home insurance, multi-risk industrial insurance, or multi-risk commercial insurance.
They also include motor insurance policies covering damage to vehicles as well as bodily injury to the owner, spouse, and children – including in the event of death.
Liability insurance policies, such as business liability, also fall under the property damage for compensation.
